Saving

Monthly spending

On the 1st of each month it sorts last month's spending into categories, compares it with the month before and points out the three that changed most.

Who it's for: People who wonder every month where the money went, but don't want to build a spreadsheet.

What it does:

  • On the 1st of each month it reads the transactions in the accounts you've linked to Muse and sorts last month's spending into categories: eating out, transport, household, fun, subscriptions and so on.
  • It compares with the month before, points out the three categories that changed most, and lists the five biggest single expenses.
  • If you've set a savings goal, it tells you how far you are from it this month.
  • It only reads. It doesn't touch your money or change any account settings.

Why this one: Muse's App Store description says it helps you understand where your money is going, tracks expenses and helps you hit a savings goal, without the spreadsheet. This one only has it sort and compare.

Keep in mind: Tell it ahead of time not to count money moved between your own accounts, or money you covered for someone and got back.

Copy for your Muse

On the 1st of each month, sort out last month's spending for me: put the transactions from the accounts I've linked to you into categories (eating out, transport, household, fun, subscriptions and so on; ask me first if a category doesn't fit), compare with the month before, point out the three categories that changed most, and list the five biggest single expenses. If I've set a savings goal, tell me how far I am from it this month.
What to do: only read the transactions in the accounts I've linked to you, and write the categories and comparison for me to see.
What not to do: do not spend or move any of my money, do not change any account settings, and do not contact any company or institution.
When to stop: stop when I say “stop the monthly spending review”.
